Rochester is the city in the state of New York, in Monroe County. It is usually nicknamed as “The Flour City”, “The Flower City” or “The World’s Image Center”. It covers the area of 96.1 square kilometers and most of it is land.

The present-day Rochester was originally the Village of Rochesterville, founded in 1803 by Colonel Nathaniel Rochester, Major Charles Carroll, and Colonel William Fitzhugh along the Genesee River. In 1821 it became the seat of the Monroe County and soon it was known as Rochester.

The population in the city is around 220 000 inhabitants, making it the third largest city in the New York state, with the population density 2368 inhabitants per square kilometre. As far as racial makeup is concerned, nearly half of the people living here are White (48,30%). The second largest racial group is African American (38,55%). There are also Native Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders and some people are of two or more races.

In the economical field, Rochester is currently experiencing a loss of manufacturing and heavy industries and a sudden boom of highly advanced, technological industries as its economy diversifies. There are some international businesses located here, for example Fortune 1000, Eastman Kodak, Constellation Brands or Paychex. Being known as the world capital of imaging, The Institute of Optics of the University of Rochester (ranked number one in the country) and the Rochester Institute of Technology (having one of the best imaging science departments in the country) are located here.

It can be said that education is a primary industry in Rochester. The University of Rochester is also the biggest employer in the city. But there are many other faculties and collages, e.g. the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, St. Bernard's School of Theology and Ministry, Rochester Institute of Technology and some more.

From the cultural institutions the most famous are Garth Fagan Dance, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, the Memorial Art Gallery, the Rochester Museum & Science Center or the Strong - National Museum of Play.
