Madison Square Garden (MSG) is famous sports arena in New York. It is located on 4 Pennsylvania Plaza, at 7th Avenue between 31st and 33rd Streets in Manhattan. Actually, this name has referred to four arenas in New York City. The first two were located at the Northeast corner of Madison Square, afterwards a new arena was built in 1925 at 50th Street and 8th Avenue and finally, the current, abovementioned one, was opened in 1968. It is sometimes advertising as "The World's Most Famous Arena".
The first Madison Square Garden (Madison Square Garden I), was formerly the passenger depot of the New York and Harlem Railroad at 26th and Madison Avenue. It was transformed into sports arena on May 30, 1879 and it was built for the sport of track cycling. The second Madison Square Garden (Madison Square Garden II), built in 1890, was located at the same street and avenue and it was designed by Stanford White. The third garden, now known as Madison Square Garden III, was built on 50th Street and Eighth Avenue by boxing promoter Tex Rickard in 1925.
Finally, the fourth garden (Madison Square Garden IV) was opened on February 11, 1968 on the site of demolished Pennsylvania Station. Architects of the arena were Charles Luckman Associates and Ellerbe Becket. The building has been owned by Cablevision since 2004. The capacity of arena is 18,200 people during the hockey game and 19,763 during the basketball game.
MSG has been home to many sports teams: New York Rangers – NHL (from 1968), New York Knicks – NBA (from 1968), New York Liberty – WNBA (from 1997), New York Titans – NLL (from 2007), New York Knights – AFL (in 1988) and New York CityHawks – AFL (1997 – 1998).
Madison Square Garden is nowadays a place where 320 events are held every year. Besides numerous sporting events it is also a famous place for large popular-music concerts. Many musicians recorded their live albums and DVDs here. From the most famous singers or groups that has played here we should mention at least some: Led Zeppelin, Fania All Stars, Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Billy Joel, Phish, Elton John, Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Pearl Jam, Cream or Michael Jackson.
