Liptovský Mikuláš is the town lying in the middle of the Liptovka hollow basin on the Vah River, in the altitude 577 metres above sea level. It covers the area of 69.97 square metres. It is a gateway to the mountain ranges Western and Low Tatras. It is the capital of county Liptovský Mikuláš, important administrative, cultural, tourist and industrial centre of Liptov region, with rich history.

As far as its history is concerned, the findings of bronze articles are proofs of the fact, that this site has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. The first written reference about the town is from 1286. The town was given first written rights in the 14th and 15th century. They were about annual and weekly fairs. The name of famous Slovak hero – brigand Juraj Jánošík is connected with the city – he was executed here in 1713. In the middle of 19th century the town became the centre of Slovak national life which culminated on 10 May 1848 by accepting the document Requests of Slovak Nation (Žiadosti slovenského národa).

The population of Liptovský Mikuláš is around 33.400 and the density is 474 inhabitants per square kilometre. The town is divided into these parts: Andice, Benice, Bodice, Demänová, Ivanovo, Ploštín, Palúdzka, Liptovská Ondrašová, Okoličné, Stolice, Vitálišovce, Podbreziny and Liptovský Mikuláš itself.

There are many historical monuments in the town, most of them on the Square of Liberators (Námestie Osloboditeľov). There are burgher’s houses from 16th and 17th century, old county house built in late baroque style (present-day County Office). There is also so called Stoličný house and Seligovský house originally built in renaissance style. Nowadays, they house the Museum of Janko Kráľ. The oldest landmark in Liptovský Mikuláš is gothic Church of st. Nicolas from the second half of 13th century. The paintings inside were made by J. Hanula. There are three altars preserved. Around the church there are three gothic statues – of Janko Kráľ, st. Nicholas and G. F. Belopotocký.

The surrounding of the town is ideal for skiing in winter. In summer, all types of water sports can be provided on water basin Liptovská Mara.
