Sheffield, the City and the Metropolitan Borough, is part of South Yorkshire County. It lies on the River Sheaf. It belongs to the eight large cities besides London in England. Sheffield is a core city (being the core of the respective area).

Sheffield had been settled since Anglo-Saxon times. There has been a market by 1296 and Sheffield grew into a small market town. By 1600 it became the main centre of cutlery production in England. At the beginning of 18th century Sheffield grew mainly because of invention of the crucible steel and a technique for fusing a thin sheet of silver onto a copper ingot to produce silver plating known as Sheffield plate. Then there came a decline caused by loss of some important export markets and cholera. In the second half of the 19th century, during the Industrial Revolution Sheffield resurrected again. In 1893 Sheffield gained the city charter. In the World War II Sheffield as producer of weapons and ammunition became a target of bombing. After war, the face of the city started to be changing, but it did not take long because of the run-down of the industries in the 1980s. In 1991 the city hosted World Student Games and because of this occasion many new sporting facilities were built. The bigger renovation of the city started with its center at the end on 20th and the beginning of 21st century.

The area of Sheffield is 367.94 square kilometers. It is a geographically diverse city, with numerous hills around. The lowest city’s point is just 10 metres (33 feet) above feet level, while some parts are at over 500 metes (1,640 feet). 61% of the city’s area is greenspace consisting of woodlands, public parks and gardens and national park. It is one of the Europe’s greenest cities.

There are 520,700 inhabitants living in Sheffield with the population density 1,415 inhabitants per square kilometer. The wider urban area has the population of 640,720.

Sheffield has two universities, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University and two further educational colleges, besides all levels of schools and two private schools and two catholic schools.

Sheffield is a very family-friendly city. There are also lot of galleries and museum, parks and open spaces and beautiful buildings mainly in the city center around Town Hall.
