United States Department of Housing and Urban Development

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development is a Cabinet department of United States government. It is often abbreviated to HUD. It was founded in 1965, on September 9, when President Lyndon Johnson signed the Department of Housing and Urban Development Act into law.

HUD’s mission is to increase homeownership, support community development and increase access to affordable housing free from discrimination. The first secretary of The Department of Housing and Urban Development became Robert C. Weaver on January 18, 1966. The headquarters of the HUD was named after him in July 2000.

As far as the headquarters building is concerned, The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development has its headquarters in The Robert C. Weaver Federal Building that is located at 451 Seventh Street SW in Washington D.C. It is large, 10 floor office building, which was constructed for the Department of HUD itself. The building was designed by architect Marcel Breuer, who is a master of the modern architectural movement in the United States. Besides him, parts of the design team were also Herbert Beckhard and Nolen Swinburne Associates. The builder was John McShain, Inc., under supervision of the General Services Administration. The construction started in November 1966 and it finished nearly two years earlier. The building was opened and dedicated to Secretary Robert C. Weaver on September 9, 1968.

HUD is administered by the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
