Supreme Court of the United States

The Supreme Court of the United States of America is located in its capital, in Washington, D.C.

The Court itself existed long before it was provided by a building in 1935, actually after 146 years. After Washington became the capital, Congress lent Supreme Court space in the new Capitol Building. It had to change its meeting place six times within the building, and for the short period it was housed in the private house (after British set fire in the Capitol Building during the war).

Finally, in 1929 the idea of own building for the Supreme Court was risen by Chief Justice Taft. Architect Cass Gilbert was charged to design the building. Neither of them survived to see the building completed. Its construction began in 1932 and was finished in 1935, under the further direction of Chief Justice Hughes and architects Cass Gilbert Jr., John R. Rockart.

The classical Corinthian architectural style was chosen because it best harmonized with the nearby congressional buildings. The building was designed on a scale in keeping with the importance and the dignity of the Court and the Judiciary as a coequal, independent branch of US Government.

The length of the building from the east to the west is 385 feet (117 metres) and from the south to the north 304 feet (92 metres). On its highest point it is four floors high. Marble from different parts of the USA was used for the construction. The wooden parts of the interior are made of American quartered white oak.

The main entrance to the Supreme Court Building is on the west side, facing the Capitol. A few low steps lead to the oval plaza in front of the building. On either side of the plaza are fountains, flagpoles and benches.

There are marble figures on either side of the steps designed by James Earle Fraser. Female figure on the left side is the Contemplation of Justice; male on the right side is the Guardian or Authority of Law. There are sixteen marble columns in front of the main entrance supporting the pediment. On the architrave above is inscribed “Equal Justice Under Law”.
