Walter Scott statue in the Central Park
The statue of Sir Walter Scott is one of 29 statues located in Central Park, New York. Most of them have been donated by individuals or organizations.
Sir Walter Scott was a Scottish romantic novelist and poet (1771 – 1832). In celebration of the centennial of his birth, a group of prominent Scottish citizens arranged for the placement of this sculpture in Central Park. Sir John Steell was chosen as the creator. He used bronze and made larger-than-life-sized statue. It was dedicated on the “Literary Walk” in Central Park in 1872, on November 2. Scott is depicted seated on a rock, in a flowing cloak with workingman’s shoes, book and pen in hand. Beside him sits his faithful dog.
