US Armed Forces recruiting station at the Times Square
US Armed Forces Recruiting station is located at Times Square, on a small traffic island between Broadway and the 7th Avenue at 43rd Street. The station is home to the recruiters from Marine, Army, Navy and Air Force. It is the most famous recruiting station in the USA.
Recruiters and the locals call it “the booth”. It was opened in 1946. For more than 60 years it has stood as a symbol of service and commitment by the New Yorkers who have joined the military. Recruiting Station was renovated in 1998 and rededicated in 1999. A modern stainless steel and glass booth replaces the old, bathroom-less one. It perfectly fits in the glamour and glitz of the Time Square. It is equipped with fluorescent lights in vibrant red, white, and blue forming American flags on its east and west sides. Above the front entrance there is a video wall broadcasting recruiting messages from all the services to the 7,000 pedestrians who walk through the neighbourhood each hour. There are also poles bearing American flags. The site of Recruiting Station at Time Square was the place of several historic anti-war demonstrations during the Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars.
