The construction of General Motors Building started in 1965 and was finished three years later, in 1968. The north end of the lobby was originally used as a showroom for General Motors cars. Later it was used by FAO Schwartz as a toy showroom. There is 1,860 square metres large sunken plaza below the building. It faces Grand Army Plaza across Fifth Avenue.
