GE Building (Rockefeller Center) at night
GE Building is the focal point of the entire Rockefeller Center complex. It is located on 30 Rockefeller Plaza in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. It is also nicknamed "The Slab" and "30 Rock". It houses offices as well as television studios of NBC. It is the 7th tallest building in New York City and the 30th tallest in the United States. The building was awarded landmark status in 1985.
The first name of the building was RCA Building according to its first tenant Radio Corporation of America, a company formed by General Electric (GE) in 1919. The name of the building was changed in 1988.
GE Building is a 70-storey, 259 metres (850 feet) tall skyscraper. It was designed by Associated Architects. They were inspired by gothic style and the building is built in Art Deco style. The base to a height of 1.2 meters (four feet) is covered by granite and the shaft has a refined facade of Indiana limestone with aluminum spandrel panels. The famous photo "Lunchtime atop a skyscraper" was created during the construction in 1932. It shows 11 construction workers eating whilst sitting on a steel beam seemingly suspended in mid-air. The construction started in 1931 and it was finished in 1933.
Inside, this modern skyscraper features an open floor plan. Below the GE Building is a shopping center. At the foot of the building is the sunken plaza, used as an upper class wintertime ice skating rink and a summertime café. Every Christmas an illuminated giant Christmas tree is erected on Rockefeller Plaza.
On the top floor (65th), there is a stylish restaurant named Rainbow Room. An observation deck on the top of the building is called "Top of the Rock" and it was reopened on November 1, 2005. It had been closed since 1986 because of the renovation of the Rainbow Room. It is both indoor and outdoor observatory, 67th floor is indoors and there are two outdoor levels at 69th and 70th floor, both with panoramic view of the city.
