Chrysler building and New York skyline at night
Chrysler building was once the tallest building in the world, and then it was surpassed by Empire State Building (just a year after it was constructed). It is one of New York’s most famous skyscrapers. It is located on the east side of Manhattan at the intersection of 42nd Street and 405 Lexington Avenue.
Chrysler Building was originally built for Chrysler Corporation, nowadays it is owned by TMW Real Estate (75%) and Tishman Speyer Properties (25%).
The construction of Chrysler Building began on September 9, 1928 and it was opened to the public on May 27, 1930. The architect of the Chrysler Building was William Van Alen. There have been two mayor renovations so far. The first one, in 1978 concentrated on construction of the granite, marble and steel entrance hall; the further one, in 1995 was the renovation of the spire.
From the architectural point of view is Chrysler Building built in Art Deco style. Decoration of the tower correspondents with decoration used on Chrysler automobiles. Interesting are mainly corners of 31st and 61st floors. Ornamentations on the lower ones are replicas of the 1929 Chrysler radiator caps, on the higher corners there are eagles, replicas of the 1929 Chrysler hood ornaments. The building is constructed of masonry, with a steel frame, and metal cladding. The top is made of stainless steel.
As far as the technical parameters are concerned, the building itself is 282 metres (925 feet) tall, together with the antenna the height rises to 318.9 meters (1,047 feet). The top floor is in the height of 274 meters (899 feet). There are 77 floors and the floor area is 111,201 square metres (1,195,000 square feet). Chrysler Building has 32 elevators. The top floors are narrow with low sloped ceilings, designed mostly for exterior appearance with interiors useful only to hold radio broadcasting and other mechanical and electrical equipment.
The spire, as well as the ornamentation on the building is lightened at night. At first there were V-shaped lighting inserted in the steel of the building itself and later groups of floodlights were added. This allows the top of the building to be lighted up in different colours during different occasions.
In 2005 the Chrysler Building was voted to be the most favourite building in New York by citizens. 90% of them placed the building in their top 10 favourite buildings.
