Central Park - The Mall

The Mall is the central promenade in the Central Park, New York, stretched from 66th to 72nd Streets. It is not popular just with those who want to enjoy walk in the Park. Skaters have dominated the area of the Mall to the west of the Bandshell and skateboarders and dance skaters can always be observed here as well.

Olmsted and Vaux, designers of the Central Park, considered promenade as an essential feature of a metropolitan park, so the Mall is one of the most formally designed elements in the Central Park. The Mall is 40-foot (12 metres) wide and it is flanked by four rows of American elms that provide a kind of ceiling above the walkway.

This long walkway is bordered by Olmsted Flowerbed that leads to Literary Walk and beyond to the Naumburg Bandshell (The Mall concert ground) in the south. Literary Walk got its name according to all the statues of writers near the walkway. There are statues or busts of William Shakespeare, Fitz-Green Halleck, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns. Although not famous in the field of literature, there are also statues of Christopher Columbus, Victor Herbert and Ludwing van Beethoven. In north boundaries of the Mall are made by Terrace Bridge, Bethesda Terrace and the Lake.

In 1991 was the Mall restored. New benches were installed and the original Vaux’s design was replicated.
