Henry VIII Gate, Windsor Castle
King Henry VIII Gate was built in 1511 to provide an entrance into the Lower ward of the Castle. The gate is created by two towers connected by an arch. It has holes in its vault, through which boiling oil could be poured on unwelcome visitors. The gated is decorated with Henry VIII’s symbols – the portcullis, the fleur-de-lis and the combined roses of Lancaster and York. There is a bridge leading to the Henry VIII Gate.
