Harrods is one of the most famous and largest department stores in the world. It was founded in 1834 by Charles Henry Harrod and present owner is Mohamed al-Fayed who bought it in 1985 for £615 million. It is located on Brompton Road in Knightsbridge, London.

Besides being a department store, the Harrods brand applies also to other companies like Harrods Bank, Harrods Estates, Harrods Casino, Harrods Aviation, and Air Harrods. The Harrods motto is Omnia Omnibus Ubique - All Things for All People, Everywhere.

What is now a famous department store began in 1834 as a wholesome grocery in Stepney, London’s East End. In 1851 Charles Henry Harrod moved his shop to Knightsbridge, to the site of present day department store. One-roomed shop with two assistants and a messenger boy has changed into a thriving retail operation selling medicines, perfumes, stationery, fruit, and vegetables under the supervision of Harrod’s son Charles Digby Harrod. By 1880 the shop were employing one hundred people. However, it burnt down in 1883. At that time Harrod fulfilled his promise and made all the Christmas deliveries he had promised. This earned him great money and he managed to build a new building on the site of previous one. It was designed by Charles William Stephens and finished in 1905. In 1959 House of Fraser, British department store holding company, bought the store.

Shopping area is over one million square feet large and there are over 330 departments. There is a saying that in Harrods one can buy everything, from a needle to an elephant. There are clothing shops for all kinds of customers, electronics, jewelry, sporting gear, bridal trousseau, pet accessories, toys, food and drink, health and beauty items, packaged gifts, stationery, housewares, home appliances, furniture, and much more. Besides these, department store Harrods includes 28 restaurants and many other kinds of services. On peak days, up to 300,000 customers visit Harrods per day.
