Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace is an official residence of the British monarch in London. It is as well the famous landmark of London and popular tourist attraction. It is also a place for state and royal entertaining. More than 50,000 visit the palace each year as guests to banquets, lunches, dinners, receptions and the royal garden parties.
Buckingham House was originally a large townhouse built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham and Normanby. William Winde designed a large, three-floored central house with two smaller flanking service wings. In 1762 King George III made it private residence for his wife, Queen Charlotte, known as “The Queen’s House”. It became an official royal palace in 1837, when Queen Victoria accessed the throne.
The major architectural changes to the palace were made in the late 19th and early 20th century by two main architects John Nash and Edward Blore. They enlarged the building by adding three wings to it forming a large courtyard. The principal façade, the East Front, designed by Edward Blore in 1850 was redesigned by Sir Aston Webb in 1913.
Buckingham Palace is furnished and decorated with priceless works of art that form part of the Royal collection, one of the major art collections in the world today. There is still some decoration from 19th century (like for example widespread use of brightly coloured scagliola and blue and pink lapis). King Edward VII got some rooms redecorated in cream and gold colour scheme of Belle époque. Many smaller reception rooms are furnished in the Chinese regency style.
Buckingham Palace Garden is a part of the Buckingham Palace and at the same time the largest private garden in London. It was originally landscaped by Capability Brown and redesigned by William Townsend Aiton of Kew Gardens and John Nash. There is an artificial lake that was finished in 1828. Adjacent to the Palace is also the Royal Mews where the royal carriages are housed. The Mall stretching from the Admiralty Arch to the Buckingham Palace was designed by Sir Aston Webb and finished in 1911.
Today, the Buckingham Palace is home not only to the Queen and her husband but it is also the London residence of the Duke of York and the Earl and Countess of Wessex. It as well houses the offices of the Royal Household and is the workplace of 450 people.
