Allianz Arena at night (blue)
Allianz Arena is a football stadium, home of FC Bayern Munich and TSV 1860. It was the stadium on which opening match of Football World Cup took place in June 2006. The decision to locate the stadium to the northern Munich district of Froettmaning was taken in July 2001. Locals have nicknamed the structure the life belt ("Schwimmreifen") or rubber boat ("Schlauchboot") because of its appearance.
From the very beginning it was clear that the new stadium would be designed just for football purposes (no as the multi-functional arena). Other two conditions were to have 66,000 seats and the roof covering of all the seats. The total capacity of the stadium is 69,901 people. 10,000 seats in both South and North sides are convertible into standing terraces. There are also two big fan restaurants the TSV 1860 restaurant in the North stand and the Bayern restaurant in the South stand, each seating approximately 1,500 people.
The construction comprised of inflatable ETFE cushions was designed by two Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron. This “see-through” stadium consists of three tiers of terracing. Colours of the cushions can change the colour depending on which club is just playing. Red and white is for Bayern and blue and white for TSV 1860. During the night all the arena lights and all three colours are changing in 30 minutes intervals.
The main constructor became construction company, Alpine Bau Deutschland GmbH tender. The works started on 21 October 2002 and it took less than 3 years to finish it. It was opened on 30 April 2005. The opening games were TSV 1860 versus 1.FC Nuremberg (3-2) on 30 May 2005 and FC Bayern versus Germany (4-2) on 31 May 2005.
The question of financing was solved by referendum, in which citizens of Munich agreed to pay higher taxes to help to pay the expenses for constructions. Part of it was paid by both home clubs. The construction cost 340 million Euros.
The stadium was named Allianz Arena after the insurance company that had its headquarters in Munich. The Allianz AG's naming rights are the core of a long-term marketing partnership between the München Stadion GmbH and the international insurance and financial services group.
